The Tough Questions

•    Where is your favorite place to write? Read?  I have an office in my basement where I like to write. It is filled with books- they are literally everywhere, it is a big mess. I prefer to read in bed but I read wherever I go. I have Kindle for my iPhone in case I am out and want to read. I prefer physical books to ebooks but love reading both

•    What did you want to be when you grew up?  I wanted to be a writer. I have always wanted to be a writer. A Paperback Writer, like The Beatles song. I also wanted to write screenplays, and I have co-written several.

•    What is one thing you need when you sit down to write? Coffee and amphetamines

•    What is one tip you would like to share with an aspiring author? When you submit a piece of writing, make sure your name and contact information is on the document itself, not just the cover letter, because they will get separated. I was associate editor of Red Scream magazine in 2006 and 2007 my editor sent me about 40 stories to read. One was so good! But I had to reject it because there was no name or email. We were taught to just throw away submissions without contact information.

•    Are you a pantser or plotter? A pantser for most of my writing however I also write screenplays and for those I do need to make an outline. But other than that I just write whatever I want and it ends up becoming a story.

From BOH reader Heather L.
•    Chili – beans or no beans?  I don’t like Chili that much but if I eat it I want some beans in it

•    Who’s your favorite superhero and why?  JOKER, because he is more of an anti-superhero than a superhero. Good guys are boring. Joker is not a good guy.

•    DC or Marvel and why is it Marvel? I really don’t like either. I am not into superhero movies, although I like the X Men.

•    You need to hide a body - who do you call to help you? No one, I will do it myself, so that there are no witnesses. After all, two can keep a secret if one is dead.

•    Favorite song to belt out in the shower? Welcome to the Jungle by Guns N Roses

•    What animal would you be and why? I would be a cat because cats are the best. I have four cats and I wish I could be one of them. They have such stress free lives and they don’t care what you think of them. I’d also like to be a snake they are pretty vicious- you don’t mess with a snake!

•    If you were stranded on a deserted island with all your human needs taken care of, what two items would you want to have with you? A lot of weed and my movie collection.

•    Next project (what are you currently working on)? I just finished writing All You Need Is Blood, Volume 1. It is a collection of short stories. One story is written in the style of William S Burroughs, the other stories are brutal, violent horror/crime stories. And I threw in two bonus flash fiction stories.

•    Scary movies - complete darkness or all the lights on? Absolute darkness. I even cover up the light the VCR button makes for total darkness. My favorite movie to watch in the dark is The Blair Witch Project.

•    Cats or dogs? Cats! I love cats and have four. To be fair, I am a huge dog lover as well, I just don’t have one. When I volunteered at the MSPCA I worked with the cats.

•    Who would you stalk? I’m in love with Naomi Watts but I’m not really the stalker type. At least, that’s what I told the judge.

•    What inspired you to start writing? Several books I read in high school, including Dracula, Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison, The Killer Inside Me by Jim Thompson, White Noise, Naked Lunch, JG Ballard, Philip K Dick, Lovecraft, Richard Laymon, Clive Barker, Bret Easton Ellis, Crime and Punishment. My favorite writer has always been and will always be Stephen King. I read Christine in 5th grade and that changed my life.

•    How old were you when you wrote your first story? Maybe twelve years old.

•    What is your favorite book/story you wrote? A story about a delusional serial killer that I wrote in junior high school.

•    Who is your current favorite author? Definitely Stephen King

•    What is your favorite genre? Extreme Horror and splatterpunk

•    Favorite horror movie? The Texas Chainsaw Massacre followed closely by The Shining.

•    Favorite book of all time? It by Stephen King

•    Cake - vanilla or chocolate? Between the two, chocolate, but I actually prefer strawberry.

•    Pizza - pineapple or definitely never on a pizza? I love pizza with pineapples on it. Usually I order it with pepperoni but pineapples are the shit!

From BOH reader Derek T.
•    Is there a particular author that inspired you to write horror? Yes, Stephen King. I can’t put into word what an influence he is, and how he made me love horror and reading and writing.

•    Are there any things required when you write?, i.e., listening to certain music? an adult beverage? complete silence? stuff like that. Marijuana, Adderral. I listen to thrash, punk, classic rock, metal and hip hop when I write but I tend to tune out music when I write.

•    Skittles or Starburst? When I went to movies as a kid, I always got Starburst, so they remind me of seeing movies, so I will have to go with Starburst, although I love Skittles too.

•    Do you read or write anything that's not horror? YES! Most of what I read is non-fiction, in particular true crime and books about serial killers. I have written for Serial Killer magazine and have written about crime for many publications. I had a true crime column at the website Severed-Cinema called UGLY WORLD. I have written about crime for other sites as well. I guess true crime is a form of horror.

•    Rhode Island is neither a road nor an island, please discuss. I love Rhode Island. I live a little bit north of Rhode Island in Massachusetts. When I was younger I acted a lot, and was in a movie filmed in Woonsocket, RI, and that was filmed at strip club called K2U. The day after, I was in a book store and was looking at the true crime books. I found one about a Rhode Island serial killer who used K2U as his hunting grounds. He picked up drunk women there and drove off with them and they were never seen again. That was weird. I was in a film called NUN OF THAT that premiered in Providence, RI.

•    How do you feel about pants? I like Adidas and Girbaud.

•    Dogs, cats or ferrets? Cats are the best but I love dogs too. I don’t really know any ferrets.

•    Mountains or beach? That’s real difficult. As a Massachusetts resident I love being by the ocean. But I also love to ski. I would have to go with mountains because I love to ski. I plan on teaching myself how to snowboard.

•    Does pineapple belong on pizza? Yes it does, pineapple pizza is awesome and it is a great combination.

•    What's your favorite taco? Soft Taco Supreme from Taco Bell

•    Would you go to space? Yes. In fact, I have been to space. I was hatched out of egg on Mars and then travelled to Earth. My last name, Tamarin, can be re-arranged to spell Martian.

•    Do you eat supper or dinner? Dinner

•    Favorite ice cream? I love cotton candy flavor ice cream.

•    Were you a good student? Yes, too good actually, I spent too much time studying and not enough partying, until I started college. Then I stopped being a good student- although I always did well in my English and Philosophy courses.

•    Who was your childhood crush? Christina Applegate as Kelly Bundy on Married… With Children. Followed closely by Alyssa Milano.

•    Your favorite thing on French fries? Ketchup and sometimes hot mustard.

From BOH reader Shannon E.
•    What’s something you want to learn/ get better at? Film making. I have been involved in many films but I have never directed anything (except in high school) and would love to write and direct a movie.

•    Why did you decide you wanted to be an author? I didn’t decide. I just knew I was a writer and that I had to write. There wasn’t much choice involved. I have these images and ideas in my head and I fell compelled to write them down. I love creating characters and interesting situations and I love literary violence and mayhem.

•    Is there anything you don't eat? I won’t eat veal because of the cruelty involved in how it is made. In general I am not a real meat eater. I mostly make smoothies with milk, fruit and vegetables.

•    If you could have 3 wishes, what would they be? Definitely Invisibility, Eternal Life, and Reading People’s Minds. I would have a lot of fun and an awesome sex life.

•    If you could have 1 hour to sit down with anyone and talk? Who would it be and what would you talk about? Rob Zombie. I’d like to discuss 1970s exploitation and horror films with him.

•    What makes you unique? The fact that I am literally completely insane and take like ten medications just so I can function.

•    What's something about you that no one else knows? I invented a time machine and went back in time to London and was Jack the Ripper. But now you know, and that’s not good!

•    What’s Something You Want to Learn or Wish You Were Better At? Self-publishing on Amazon. I’m teaching it to myself as I release my new book and it is petty complicated and frustrated.

•    Know Any Good Jokes? Yes, I saw the film Halloween Ends recently and it was so terrible it was a joke.

•    What’s Something That Bugs You? The film Halloween Ends, the trend of endless remakes, reboots, sequels. It bugs me that Quentin Tarantino is only going to make one more film. I hope he changes his mind. It bugs me that people talk trash about Rob Zombie for having rednecks in his films and always featuring his wife in his films. Both the Zombies are amazing.

•    What’s the Most Embarrassing Thing You Can Remember That’s Happened to You?  I was in Los Angeles to attend to a film shoot. The whole street was film studios. I walked into the wrong one, and they were shooting a transexual porn film. They asked me if I was one of the transexuals and I realized I was in the wrong place!

•    What’s Your Favorite Place on Earth? Boulder, Colorado

•    Who Are the Special People in Your Life? My 8 year old son and my wife

•    What’s Something You’re Proud of? My son, I am proud of everything he does, I am very lucky.

•    If your life were a movie who would play you? I think I might look a little like Elijah Wood, and I am a big fan of his.

•    If you could be anyone for a day, who would it be? Alien Jourgenson, the lead singer of Ministry and the Revolting Cocks.

•    If you could have a superpower what would it be? Invisibility. I am a perverted voyeur I would love to be invisible.

•    What would you do if there was zombie apocalypse right now? You mean we’re not in a zombie apocalypse now? Thank goodness. I would board up all the windows and make Molotov Cocktails.

•    What were you like as a child? I was a bad kid. Once, I was mad at my father so I filled up his morning slippers with broken glass. I feel real bad about a lot of things I did as a kid. I loved to light fires and that was kind of a problem. I also loved to steal shit, especially lighters. I had all 4 wisdom teeth pulled when I was pretty young and I got hooked on the codeine they prescribed me. That is the true gateway drug!

Thank you David! I cannot get the that song out of my head now... "All you need is love Blood" 😉
